Short Description – in case u r in a hurry:

This Foodie madness post is a part of a series called Culinary pilgrimage – On a weekend in Jan 15 we decided to travel to Lucknow on Culinary pilgrimage. A 2 day trip to Lucknow just to eat out at the numerous streetfood shops that have survived over time……….We ended up eating at 9 places in a span of 26 hours & spent a total of approx Rs. 1200. The cost of staying at Lucknow & travelling to Lucknow from Delhi was, needless to say, many times more.

Ram Asreys current shop has a large Hall & sweets are displayed in a long glass counter. Am sure 200 years back the shop used to look very different – they did not attempt to put up a history wall or talk much about it. So the only place that mentions this long existance is a panel on top of the façade.

The people manning the sweet counter were pretty knowledgeable about all the sweets. They were warm and nice to us as we ordered 1 piece of several sweets & then packed some more.

They had I guess 50 varieties of sweets. We tasted the most unusual looking ones & also the ones that this shop is famous for.

They also sell a range of namkeens that we did not review. Hv heard some of them r fabulous. Leave it for next time.

      I loved reading that

Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

We started with Malai ki gilori – A silhoutte look alike of paan ki gilori (paan leaf with paan masala inside & a metal foil on the top). The sweet had a malai (layer on top of milk) in place of paan, khoya , mishri and dry fruits in place of paan masala. The taste was interesting mix of unidirectionally sweet outer layer & an intense taste filling that had a tinge of salt in addition to being sweet. Loved the sweet & rate it 4/5.

      Malai Gillauri

      Malai ki gilori

We next moved on to Kale til ke laddoo – laddoo made from black til (sesame)!!!! A black colored laddoo. Did not quite remember anything Indian that was close to this. Have had sweet food in China made from Black sesame.

The laddoo was intense to taste, surely different from the rest, had texture similar to khoya based laddoo, had flavors of both sesame & khoya. Liked this laddoo the most. Rate it 4.25/5

      Til ke Laddoo Tray

      Kale til ke laddoo

Browned khoya laddoo was another one in which the milk was reduced till it became brown & then taddoos were made from it. Liked that quite a bit but must say that it sounded better than it tasted. Rate it 3.5/5

We also had the Daal & dry fruits laddoo. Daal was in the center & dry fruits clung to it from all sides.

cross section of Daal & dry fruits laddoo

cross section of Daal & dry fruits laddoo

Dry fruits were good to have but what deserves a mention is the quality of the daal & the daal laddoo. Grainy, intense, flavors of daal intact & just very good. Rate it 4.25/5

Overall rating of food at Ram Asrey averages out to 4/5

Look forward to revisiting. Will keep u updated. Pls share ur experiences as well.

      Amitabh Bachchan

      Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan, the Quintessential Indian superstar is one of the most prominent and highly acclaimed film actor of all times. Bachchan is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. Amitabh simply relishes Ram Asrey’s Malai paan. It was a proud moment for us when the iconic actor himself asked for our famed malai paans to be served to all his esteemed guests at his grand 70th birthday celebration in Film City.

India Today, Amitabh’s 70th Birthday Bash coverage,

His 70th birthday bash, which was expected to be a grand affair turned out to be phenomenal. It was a flamboyantly splendid party with glitz, glamour, opulence, creativity and loads of love for the superstar reflecting from the entire preparations that were no less than perfect. The food was a sumptuous layout of the best that can be imagined. Done by top chefs, it was a magical feast or so it seemed with the most delicious fare laid down in the most luscious manner. Marut Sikka, who was instrumental in bringing this gastronomical delight to the party, said, “The high points of the dinner were Pistachios Chicken and Malai Paan.”

Times Of India, Amitabh’s 70th Birthday Bash coverage,

Clearly, if it was the birthday of the chora Ganga kinare waala, the celebrations would have been incomplete without some UP ka flavour.

And adding sweetness to those special moments when Big B celebrated his 70th birthday with all of filmdom at Film City were Lucknow’s famed malai paan which the actor had asked for himself.

Talking to us about it, Pankaj Behari, whose 250-year old sweet shop supplied the sweets to the Bachchan do, says, “It all happened so suddenly that it was only later that we could get around to talking about it. Actually, the person in charge of catering during Amitabhji’s birthday celebrations was Marut Sikka and I got a call from him saying ‘Amitabh loves your malai paan and wants some to be served at his birthday celebrations.‘ I was asked to make 1000 pieces and baquaida two of my technicians were sent air tickets and passes to get inside the venue to deliver and serve the sweets. I was told the guests polished off the mithai.”

      Nawab Wajid Ali Shah

Wajid Ali Shah  (30 July 1822 – 1 September 1887) was the tenth and last Nawab of Awadh(now called Lucknow), holding the position for 9 years. Ram Asrey was established in 1805, hence we had the great honor of serving the last Nawab of Lucknow.  Believe it or not, once a topaz made of candy was presented to Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. Shankar Dayal Sharma

Shankar Dayal Sharma was the ninth President of India. He studied law (1937 – 1942) and later on taught law (1943 – 1952) at the Lucknow University. He mentioned to a popular newspaper reporter (Aaj Saaptaahik Visheshank – 12th September 1993 edition) about his passion for Ram Asrey’s famous sweets.

As illustrated by writer, Dr. Ganga Narayan Tripathi,
Even today he remembers the blissful holy dip at Sangam, Allahabad and the delightful taste and joy of having Ram Asrey’s sweets during his stay in Lucknow.

      He adds,

Seeing Shri Shankar Dayal Sharma as the president of India, one can rightfully say in reference to his years spent in Lucknow,

      “लखनऊ हम पर फ़िदा है, हम फिदाये लखनऊ|”
Translated in English, Lucknow is devoted to me and I am in love with Lucknow.
